April 30, 2007 - An informal meeting between four individuals has turned out to be an important step for The Kokotoni Project. These folks met to just talk about their experiences. Two hours later, many ideas had emerged, decisions were made, and the ball starting rolling. Our mission statement and goal list can be directly linked to this meeting. In addition, we've made contact and appointments with both Duke University administrators and with Choice, which will likely be fruitful. Although these four individuals haven't made such decisions, they will likely be officers of this organization. This meeting will probably go down as The Kokotoni Project's first "official" meeting; future meetings have already been agreed upon.
April 19, 2007 - Africa Presentation - Grand Nursing Rounds At Duke University Hospital - Jessica and Aaron Loukonen, as well as Catherine Williams, a Duke nurse who has volunteered in Tanzania, Senegal, Haiti, and Honduras, presented for the Grand Nursing Rounds about their experiences in volunteering. In addition to sharing their stories and photographs, they were able to present their ideas on establishing avenues for nurses to become involved in volunteering abroad. March 15, 2007 - Committee Elected - A new community committee to run the Kokotoni Clinic has been elected. The previous committee was rife with problems and conflict. Time will tell if this committee will be more successful. Goals for this clinic will be to stem the loss of money from the clinic, as well as properly organizing the staff. Money raised during the December fundraising have been held pending reorganization. The clinic is in need of a fridge; it hopefully will be purchased soon.
January 19, 2007 - Fundraising Results - Choice Humanitarian has received, and set aside, $800 for the Kokotoni Clinic. The money has been sent to the Choice coordinator in Kenya, and hopefully will begin to serving the clinic, in particular to purchase a fridge.
